Personality matters.

I was thinking about that while watching David put on a spectacular performance recently from the third row at the House of Blues in Boston.

Of course, most people know him as the legendary, insanely talented, ridiculously awesome frontman of one of the best hard rock bands in history, Van Halen.

But today, he’s head of his own band, and he’s still got it all going on. Big time.

What an entertainer. What a show.

As I watched him perform, I couldn’t help but be enthralled and exhilarated, but I was also thinking about all the practical lessons he offers for anyone even trying to grow a business or lead an organization, never mind establish themselves as a strong personal brand.

In a world where everyone is vying for attention and interest, your greatest advantage is being unmistakably, undeniably, unabashedly YOU.

Don’t hold back. Put it all on the line. That’s what people respond to. That’s what people like. That’s what people respect.

On stage, David constantly moves his body at an incredibly high rate of speed (especially for a 71-year-old), gesturing, jumping, prancing, laughing, smiling, pointing, screaming, yelling, talking, and, of course, singing and dancing.

Like, wow.

He’s a quintessential leader and unequivocal role model for building a personal brand. Yes, absolutely.

He’s a rockstar through and through – and so are you.
