The Picture of New Marketing — The Tablet Computer

Kindle Fire HD

I did it. I got a tablet. I had been thinking of getting one of these small, mobile, touchscreen computing devices for a long time until I finally bought one last month — on Black Friday, of course — at Best Buy in Marlborough, MA.

I have to admit I haven’t exactly broken it in yet. I’ve only used it a couple dozen times or so, mostly for keeping up with the news on Boston.com and checking my email, not nearly enough to have developed a comfortable, regular routine on it.

I have big plans for my Kindle Fire HD, though. I see myself using it for social media consulting over coffee, lunch and dinner with clients as well as for reading eBooks, listening to music, watching movies, shopping and other random web activities.

Knowing how rapidly mobile marketing, commerce, fundraising and the like are beginning to take off, a tablet of some kind really was a must-have device for me. Like it or not, how brands communicate with their constituents — and vice versa — is increasingly via the mobile web.

What about you? Do you own a tablet? Are your advertising, marketing, sales and fundraising efforts optimized for the mobile revolution? Are you ready for this monumental paradigm shift in how people seek, consume, digest and respond to online news, information, entertainment and miscellaneous content?

  • It’s great to see that you’ve taken the plunge Bob. I’ve been using my iPad for some time now. In addition to using it for email and social media, I use it to take notes in all my meetings and stay organized. I have not carried a pen and paper in six months.

  • Bob-
I have not broken down yet myself to buy a tablet, but likely will in early 2013.

Our marketing plans at Fiserv Investment Services do include catering to the tablet/mobile market, which we plan to expand on in the near future. One of the market segments we cater to is financial planning firms and individual planners. This industry is on the fast-track with mobile adoption, as financial planners seek to use tablets during meetings with their clients to present proposals and plans — anywhere that is convenient to their clients, much like you plan to use it with your clients.

As a techology solutions provider, we are creating apps of our financial planning tools to make it easy for our FP clients to access their plans and proposals. Whether they create them at the office or on the fly, they love being able to bring only a tablet to their clients’ homes or offices, a coffee shop, or wherever. And the fact they they can get their email, get news online, share photos of their kids, and more on the tablet is just a bonus.

  • Jeff, Dave and David…thanks so much for your comments.

Dave, I’m not surprised you have an iPad. You’re always up on the very latest technologies and tools. And everything I hear is that the iPad is the gold standard of tablets. Good for you.

And Jeff and David, you’ll each have a tablet soon, I’m sure. Kindle, Nook, Nexus, iPad, etc. It’s just a matter of which one you choose.
