Opinion: What UNH’s Ending of Journalism Major Says about Social Media

Education, Media, Social Media
I heard recently that the University of New Hampshire was going to be ending its journalism major soon. This wasn't news to me, not at all. I started my blog in 2004, and frankly I saw the writing on the chalkboard years ago that traditional media, journalism and communications as a whole was soon to be in the rear view mirror. Basic writing and public speaking skills are as important as ever, but how, where and when messages are shared is right up there in priority. We as organizations, institutions, businesses, as a society, shouldn't be running for the hills when it comes to social media and digital communications in any way, shape or form. We should be running towards all these emerging, new technologies, not away from them. Social…

Using Social Media to Spread the Word

Wait! What? Yes, it's true. Believe it or not, I went to church recently. The Franklin United Methodist Church to be exact. The same church I went to as a kid growing up in the ridiculously awesome town of Franklin, Massachusetts. At the most, I go to church only a few times a year, on average. I always enjoy the experience when I'm there, though. Always. This was a particularly great day to be sitting in the pews with my wife, Barbara, and my mother - who's been going to this church for over 60 years. First of all, my sister, Cathy, was playing the organ, as she has done countless times there over the years going all the way back to when she was just a teenager. Watching her…

Rock Your Audience

Rock Your Audience

Branding, Business, Marketing, Social Media
I recently saw a ridiculously awesome movie, Bohemian Rhapsody. You know the story. It's about the legendary rock band, Queen, and their late, great lead singer, Freddie Mercury. There's a scene in this movie in which the band is developing the idea for their song, "We Will Rock You." You know the song. They wanted to engage their audience. They wanted their fans to be part of that song. Watching that scene and listening to that song gave me a thought. As it was for Queen in playing that song, it is for all brand and businesses. You want to engage your audience. You want to involve them in whatever it is you do in some way, shape or form. You want to rock your audience.
